WASHINGTON, March 16 (UPI) -- Washington forward Alex Ovechkin said he didn't intend to injure a rival NHL player and was "disappointed" he was suspended by the NHL because of the incident.

The league Monday suspended Ovechkin for two games for a play Sunday in which the Capitals player hit Chicago defenseman Brian Campbell.

Ovechkin shoved Campbell, who was skating with the puck, from behind and the Blackhawks player crashed into the boards. Campbell broke a collarbone and fractured a rib. Game officials handed Ovechkin a major penalty and game misconduct for the play.

Ovechkin, in his statement Tuesday, said he was sorry Campbell, who will miss about eight weeks, was injured and "I hope he is able to return to his team soon."

"As players we must accept responsibility for our actions and I am no different, but I did not intend to injure Brian and that is why I was disappointed with the NHL's decision (Monday)," Ovechkin said. "I look forward to returning to my team and doing everything I can to be the best player I can be."

This is Ovechkin's second suspension this season. The latest benching will cost him more than $230,000.
