INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 12 (UPI) -- Roberta Vinci rallied to defeat Melanie Oudin Thursday and Sloane Stephens won the first match of her WTA career in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open.
Oudin became a major story at the U.S. Open last year when she surprisingly reached the quarterfinals, but after a good start Thursday she was quickly eliminated by Vinci 3-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Vinci will meet 21st seeded Daniela Hantuchova in the second round. The 32 seeds in the tournament at Indian Wells, Calif., received byes past the first round.
Stephens, 16, made it to the second round with a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (9-7) victory over Lucie Hradecka. Stephens, ranked 747th in the world, will take on 12th seeded Vera Zvonareva in the second round.
Carlos Suarez Navarro earned a match against No. 1 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 decision over Alize Cornet.
Sybille Bammer also advanced, defeating Katrina Srebotnik 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.
