Jones won 13 tournaments during her LPGA career and played on seven U.S. Solheim Cup teams, including the first competition in 1990. It was her putt to close out a 3-and-2 victory over Karine Icher that sealed the title in 2002 as the United States rallied from two points down on the final day.

"I am honored and absolutely ecstatic to be chosen as the 2011 Solheim Cup captain," Jones said. "The Solheim Cup has been a huge part of my career as a player and now it will be even more exciting as I prepare for what promises to be another great Solheim Cup in Ireland."

Alison Nicholas was previously announced as captain for the European team.

The United States has won eight of the 11 Solheim Cup competitions, including the last three.
