MARSEILLE, France, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Former Marseille champion Gilles Simon of France was eliminated in the first round of the Open 13 tennis event Tuesday.
The No. 5 seed was overcome by Belgian Olivier Rochus 7-5, 6-2 on the Palais des Sports indoor hard courts. Simon won the Marseille championship 2007.
No. 8 Frenchman Julien Benneteau held off Swiss qualifier Stephane Bohli 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5).
It was a tough day for another French favorite, Arnaud Clement, the Marseille titlist in 2006. He was ousted by Italian Andreas Seppi 7-6 (7-2), 7-5.
France's Michael Llodra advanced against qualifier and fellow Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin with a 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-4 win. Llodra was last year's runner-up, losing in the final to compatriot Jo Wilfried Tsonga.
Tsonga will play fellow Frenchman Josselin Ouanna Wednesday.
