Verdasco downs Roddick in SAP final

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Spaniard Fernando Verdasco rebounded from a losing set to bump off top-seeded American Andy Roddick Sunday and claim the SAP Open in San Jose, Calif.

Verdasco, the second seed, downed Roddick 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, breaking a personal seven-game losing streak to Roddick and becoming the first Spaniard to win the tournament since Manuel Santana earned the title in Berkeley, Calif., in 1964.

Verdasco collected 15 aces and didn't let seven double faults stand in his way after dropping the first set to a seemingly confident Roddick.

The Spaniard scored an early break for a 2-1 edge before winning the second set. The third set was even until Verdasco gained the crucial service break in the ninth game for a 5-4 lead.

He then unleashed a pair of aces after falling behind 15-30 in the next game to win the match.

Roddick, who won the SAP Open in 2004, 2005 and 2008, fell to 28-18 in career title matches.
