Arizona announces self-imposed sanctions

TUCSON, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- University of Arizona officials announced Friday the school would impose two years of sanctions on its men's basketball program.

The NCAA is investigating Arizona basketball because of a letter sent from former Coach Lute Olson by a booster group asking for a donation to a school-sponsored tournament. Such donations are against NCAA rules.

Athletic Director Kathleen LaRose said Friday the school would cut one scholarship for the 2011-12 academic year and for the next two years reduce the number of days coaches are allowed to recruit. The number of campus visits by basketball prospects will also be trimmed.

"The university is deeply and profoundly committed to honoring not just the letter, but the spirit of the NCAA's efforts to foster fair and ethical competition," LaRose said. "As an institution, we expect excellence on the field of play as well as in the conduct of our programs and will work diligently to ensure that these standards always are met."

NCAA officials have said Olson misled those investigating the matter. Olson stepped down after last season and the team is now coached by Sean Miller. Arizona has an 11-10 record this season.
