BOSTON, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Brian Gionta scored the only goal of the shootout Thursday, giving Montreal a 3-2 win that extended Boston's longest losing streak in 85 years to nine games.
Gionta's goal, a backhander that was lifted over Tuukka Rask, opened the third round of the shootout. Jaroslav Halak then made a stick save against Marc Savard to end the game.
Halak made 45 saves and Montreal got second-period goals from Glen Metropolit and Roman Hamrlik to overcome a 2-0 deficit.
Mark Recchi and Blake Wheeler scored for Boston, which is in the midst of its longest skid since the Bruins dropped 11 in a row during the 1924-25 season. Boston will try to end the streak Saturday when it hosts Vancouver.
Montreal has won all three meetings between the teams this season.
