Padres sign free agent pitcher Garland

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- The San Diego Padres signed free-agent right-handed pitcher Jon Garland to a one-year contract Tuesday, sources said.

Citing an unnamed source, MLB.com reported Garland will round out the Padres' starting staff pending a physical. FoxSports.com reported Tuesday Garland would receive $5.3 million for 2010, and then either $6.75 million or a $600,000 buyout in 2011.

Garland, 30, split last season between the Los Angeles Dodgers, for whom he made six starts, and the Arizona Diamondbacks, who started him 27 times. He compiled an 11-13 record with a 4.01 ERA over the course of the year.

For his career, he sports a 117-102 record with a 4.42 ERA over 10 years. Garland was with the Chicago White Sox for his first eight seasons, for whom he won 18 games in both 2005 and 2006, making the American League All-Star squad in 2005.

He will join Chris Young, Mat Latos, Kevin Correia and Clayton Richard in the Padres' starting rotation.
