WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Nicklas Backstrom and David Steckel scored third-period goals Tuesday to lead the Washington Capitals to a 3-2 win over Detroit.

Trailing 2-1 at 13:15 of the third period, Backstrom and Steckel scored 46 seconds apart to the turn the contest around.

Matt Bradley added a tally for the Capitals, who posted the victory despite being outshot 46-23 thanks to a strong performance from goalie Jose Theodore, who earned his 14th win of the season.

Caps superstar Alex Ovechkin failed to pick up a shot on net -- only the third time that has happened in his 365-game career.

The Red Wings were led by goals from Brian Rafalski and Dan Cleary while Chris Osgood allowed three goals on 23 shots in the loss.
