Police probe Fleury's sex abuse complaint

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Winnipeg police say they are investigating a sexual-abuse complaint filed by former Calgary Flames captain Theo Fleury against his juniors coach.

The complaint was filed this month by Fleury, who alleges he was molested by Graham James, who was his juniors coach in Winnipeg before he went on to a roller-coaster NHL career.

The Calgary Herald reported Saturday Fleury had first laid out the allegations in his recent autobiography "Playing With Fire."

The Herald said the allegations brought some criticism down of Fleury. Critics questioned why he had not gone to the police but instead raised the charges in his book instead.

Fleury issued a statement saying he could not comment further pending the completion of the police probe.

James was convicted in 1997 of sexually assaulting two of his other players and sent to prison for 3 1/2 years. He was last reported living in Montreal, the newspaper said.
