Lynn leads Joburg Open at halfway point

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- England's David Lynn shot a 4-under-par 67 Friday and grabbed a 1-stroke lead halfway through the European PGA Tour's Joburg Open in South Africa.

Lynn, looking for his second European Tour victory in more than 300 starts, is at 12-under 130. Charl Schwartzel, who won last week's Africa Open, had a 68 Friday and is alone in second place. Hendrik Buhrmann, Darren Clarke, Jbe' Kruger and Danny Willett are tied for third at 10-under 132.

First-round leader Neil Schietekat followed up Thursday's 62 with a 72 at the tougher East Course at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington and slipped into a tie for 10th place.

Lynn turned in a steady round Friday. His opening 63 came on the shorter West Course, where scores were generally lower, on the strength of 10 birdies. He opens his second round with a birdie but was back to even with a bogey at the fourth hole. That, however, was his only slip as he added three birdies and 10 pars before closing the day with a birdie at 18.
