SEATTLE, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Three free throws by Quincy Pondexter and Darnell Gant over the final 13 seconds Thursday allowed No. 16 Washington to fight off Oregon State 76-70.
The Huskies had a tougher-than-expected time with the Beavers, but held on to win the opening Pacific-10 Conference game of the season for both teams.
Washington (10-2) won its fourth straight since losing to Georgetown Dec. 12.
Calvin Haynes brought Oregon State within three by making a layup with 20 seconds remaining but the Beavers could not score again. Pondexter made two foul shots with 13 seconds left and Gant added 1-of-2 with 5 seconds to go.
Pondexter scored 20 points and Isiah Thomas had 19.
Oregon State (6-6) was led by Roeland Schaftenaar with 16 points.
