LUBBOCK, Texas, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Texas Tech University football Coach Mike Leach was suspended Monday following complaints about his treatment of a player who was injured.

The parents of wide receiver Adam James said he was mistreated after suffering a concussion, The Dallas Morning News reported.

"At Texas Tech all such complaints are considered as serious matters, and as a result an investigation of the incident is under way," a school statement said. "Until the investigation is complete, Texas Tech University is suspending coach Leach from all duties as head football coach effective immediately. The investigation into this matter will continue in a thorough and fair manner."

The player, a sophomore, is the son of ESPN college football analyst Craig James.

The James family released a statement that said Adam James had been subjected to "actions and treatment not consistent with common sense rules for safety and health."

Ted Liggett, Leach's attorney, said the circumstances differed from what had been reported and the coach's suspension would be appealed, ESPN said.

Defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeil will coach the team Saturday in its Alamo Bowl game against Michigan State.

A Texas Tech spokeswoman said in a Dallas Morning News report the investigation will be conducted by representatives of the chancellor and president of the university.
