NHL: New Jersey 4, Ottawa 2

NEWARK, N.J., Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Martin Brodeur set a record for most games played by an NHL goaltender Friday and made 27 saves in leading New Jersey past Ottawa 4-2.

It was the 1,030th game of Brodeur's 17-year career, all of which has been spent with the Devils. That moved him past Patrick Roy for most games played by a goalie.

Jay Pandolfo scored on a tip-in with 1:38 to play in the second period to put New Jersey in front for good.

Bryce Salvador then produced the only third-period goal on a shot that reached the net by taking an odd hop past Brian Elliott.

Salvador shot the puck from the left wing outside the blue line and it climbed up Elliott's stick before bouncing off his back and across the goal line.

New Jersey won its third straight and moved into a share of the lead with Pittsburgh in the Atlantic Division. Ottawa had won three of its previous four games.

Brodeur also holds the NHL record for most wins. His victory over Ottawa was his 579th career triumph -- 29 more than Roy accumulated.
