COL BKB: New Mexico 84, Texas A&M 81

HOUSTON, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Roman Martinez had 22 points and seven rebounds Saturday, leading New Mexico's 84-81 upset of 18th-ranked Texas A&M.

Martinez capped his effort by sinking two free throws in the final seconds.

New Mexico raced out to a surprising 40-29 halftime lead, spurred by an 8-0 run with about 4 minutes left in the first stanza.

A 13-2 surge drew A&M within 67-61 with 6:14 remaining, but New Mexico prevented a late rally.

Darington Hobson scored 18 points with five rebounds.

Dairese Gary scored 14 with six assists and Phillip McDonald added 10 points and four rebounds for the Lobos (10-0), who are off to their best start since a similar 10-0 opening during the 1995-96 season.

Donald Sloan led A&M with 29 points.

B.J. Holmes scored 14 points, while Bryan Davis scored 10 with seven rebounds for the 8-2 Aggies, who sank to 1-5 in the all-time series.
