Mauresmo retires from tennis

ISSY-LES-MOULINEAUX, France, Dec. 3 (UPI) -- French tennis player Amelie Mauresmo, who won the Australian Open and Wimbledon title in 2006, said Thursday she is retiring from competitive tennis.

Mauresmo, 30, reached the world No. 1 ranking for five weeks in 2004 and also for 34 weeks in 2006. She was in the Top 10 of season-ending rankings seven times. Mauresmo is No. 21 in the final 2009 rankings.

"I don't want to train anymore," Mauresmo said at a news conference. "I had to make a decision, which became evident in the last few months and weeks. When you grow older, it's more difficult to stay at the top. It's a bit sad but this is the right decision. I was lucky enough to have an exceptional career and to experience very strong feelings on the court."

Mauresmo ends her WTA career with 25 tournament titles including last February's Paris Indoors, and nearly $15 million in winnings. The 2006 wins at Wimbledon and the Australia Open were her only Grand Slam titles. She played on 11 Fed Cup teams, helping France to the championship in 2003, and also won a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics.
