RICHMOND, Va., Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Jay Gavin's 20 points, five rebounds and three assists Saturday led Virginia Commonwealth to a solid 82-69 upset of 17th-ranked Oklahoma.
VCU built a 44-34 halftime lead against the team headed by its former coach, Jeff Capel, and led 61-46 with 13:05 to play.
Larry Sanders had 17 points and four assists and Ed Nixon scored 10 points for the Rams (2-1), who bounced back from an 83-67 loss to William and Mary on Wednesday.
They shot 46.7 percent from the field (28-of-60).
Tony Crocker led Oklahoma with 19 points, six rebounds and two steals.
Tiny Gallon scored 15 with 11 rebounds, while Tommy Mason-Griffin added 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Sooners (2-1), who sank just 5-of-26 3-point attempts and could not overcome their 14 turnovers.
