NHL: Vancouver 7, Montreal 1

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Ryan Kesler scored the first of three Vancouver goals in the first period Wednesday, Henrik Sedin had two in the second and the Canucks crushed Montreal 7-1.

Vancouver lost its first three games of the season, but ended that streak in emphatic fashion by putting seven of 31 shots past Canadiens' goalie Carey Price.

No team has scored more than seven goals in the young NHL season. Boston is the only other team to have scored that many, putting together a 7-2 victory over Carolina Saturday.

Kesler, Mason Raymond and Steve Bernier scored in a span of less than five minutes in the opening period for a 3-0 lead. Sedin scored on a pair of backhanders to give the Canucks a 5-1 advantage after two periods.

Roberto Luongo made 27 saves to get the victory. He had surrendered 10 goals on 61 shots in his previous appearances this year.
