Sharapova wins Tokyo tennis final

TOKYO, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Russia's Maria Sharapova won the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo Saturday when seventh-seeded Jelena Jankovic quit with a right wrist injury.

Sharapova held a 5-2 first-set advantage when her Serbian opponent decided she could not continue.

"Jelena started off so strong," Sharapova said in an on-court interview. "It was my second final of the year and I was a bit nervous. I wish (Jelena) a speedy recovery, and hopefully we can play again soon."

Sharapova, who returned to tennis in May after a 10-month absence with a right shoulder injury, lost to Elena Dementieva in straight sets at the Rogers Cup at Toronto in August in her only other final this season.

It was her first title since a tournament at Amelia Island, S.C., in April 2008.
