TIMONIUM, Md., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Lonnie Nielsen, seeking to cap his best year on the Champions Tour, took a one-shot lead Thursday in the opening round of the Senior Players Championship.
Nielsen has two victories since joining the tour five years ago, one of them coming this year.

He shot a 5-under 65 at the Baltimore Country Club East Course Thursday to jump a shot in front of two of the tour's biggest names -- Tom Watson and Jay Haas.
Watson almost won the British Open this year at age 59. Haas was the leading money winner on the Champions Tour two years ago, was second last season and posted a victory two weeks ago in Hickory, N.C.
Sandy Lyle, a former British Open and Masters champion, was alone in fourth at 67.
