MLB: Washington 2, Atlanta 1

ATLANTA, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Pete Orr singled home Ryan Zimmerman from second with one out in the ninth Thursday, giving the Washington Nationals a 2-1 victory over Atlanta.

Before taking the field, the Braves knew their slim playoff hopes had come to an end. Colorado wiped out Atlanta's bid for a wild-card berth earlier in the day by defeating Milwaukee 9-2.

The score had been tied at 1-1 since the fourth inning when Zimmerman opened the ninth with a double off Rafael Soriano (1-6). After Mike Morse struck out, Orr singled to left on an 0-2 pitch to bring home Zimmerman.

Atlanta put runners on first and third with two out in the bottom of the ninth but Mike MacDougal came on to get Omar Infante on a fielder's choice to end the game.

MacDougal earned his 19th save and reliever Tyler Clippard (4-2) got the victory with a one-hit, shutout effort over 2 2/3 innings.

Washington won its fourth straight, but is assured of having the worst record in the majors this year. The Nationals have 103 losses going into the season's final weekend.
