MLB: San Francisco 4, Arizona 1

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Brad Penny threw a complete game Wednesday and Eli Whiteside drove in three runs to carry the San Francisco Giants to a 4-1 decision over Arizona.

Despite the win, the Giants were eliminated from playoff contention when the Colorado Rockies defeated Milwaukee earlier in the evening. San Francisco won its third straight and will finish the season with a winning record for the first time in five years.

Whiteside had a two-run single during San Francisco's three-run second and added a solo homer in the fourth.

Kevin Mulvey (0-3) took the loss, giving up four runs on five hits in six innings. It was his fourth major league start.
