The Japanese player, who won seven WTA titles in the 1990s and then retired, returned to the tour last year.

Date Krumm, who turned 39 Monday, became the second-oldest woman in the modern era to win a WTA singles event. Only Billie Jean King, who won a tournament in 1983, was older, at 39 years, seven months and 23 days.

"For the past year, I didn't really know if I could really compete well on the WTA Tour, but it looks OK now," Date Krumm said. "I could play my own game exactly as I wanted to. I'll have to be careful not to get any injuries, but I think I'll be able to keep playing for a couple of years."
