Garrett Jones hit a first-inning sacrifice fly, while Andy LaRoche had two of the seven hits for the Pirates, who snapped their six-game losing streak.

Winner Donald Veal (1-0), the second of five Pirate pitchers, recorded his first major league victory by limiting Los Angeles to two hits in two scoreless innings with no walks and three strikeouts.

Closer Matt Capps earned his 26th save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

LA's run scored on Orlando Hudson's second-inning double.

Blake DeWitt and Brad Ausmus had two hits apiece for the Dodgers, who need one win to clinch the National League West.

The losing pitcher was starter Jon Garland (11-12).
