WASHINGTON, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Fredy Montero scored in the 84th minute Saturday, lifting the Seattle Sounders to a 2-1 win over D.C. United.

The Sounders (9-6-10) also beat United 2-1 in a non-league match at Washington Sept. 2 to win the U.S. Open Cup, giving them the first Open Cup title by an expansion franchise since Chicago in 1998.
United (8-6-12) suffered its first home field setback in 2009 (6-1-5) and are third behind the Eastern Conference-leading Columbus Crew and the second-place Chicago Fire.
The loss severely damaged United's playoff hopes.
