MLB: San Francisco 5, Colorado 3

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Barry Zito scattered eight hits and gave up only one run in 8 1/3 innings Saturday in San Francisco's 5-3 victory over Colorado.

Zito (9-11) struck out seven and walked one as the Giants moved within a game of the Rockies in the wild-card chase. Shooting for his 11th complete game and fifth career shutout, Zito took the mound in the ninth, but came out after Brad Hawpe hit a solo homer.

Pablo Sandoval homered for the second time in as many games and went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Eli Whiteside belted an RBI triple, while Juan Uribe hit a run-scoring double.

The Rockies, who have lost four straight, slipped to five games behind the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

Losing pitcher Jason Marquis (14-9), who entered the game hoping to match his career-high 15 wins, gave up five runs on nine hits in six innings.

Colorado got all its runs in the ninth – on Hawpe's solo shot and a two-run, pinch-hit single by Seth Smith.
