Gary Spicer, Harwell's friend and attorney, said the Tigers' broadcasting legend still needed additional tests and had been prescribed rest, which has necessitated the cancellation of appointments over the next few weeks, the newspaper said.

Harwell spent 55 years as a major league baseball announcer, including 42 years with the Tigers. He has had no serious health concerns during his lifetime, during which he never missed a game due to illness.

Spicer told the Free Press that Harwell was looking forward to his 68th wedding anniversary with his wife Lulu on Aug. 30, as well as to his 92nd birthday on Jan. 25, 2010.
