MLB: New York Mets 5, San Diego 1

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Johan Santana gave up a run and five hits in eight innings Sunday, leading the New York Mets to a 5-1 win over the San Diego Padres.

The run scored after New York carried a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth.

Santana (13-8) walked two and struck out four. He also had two hits and an RBI -- his two hits equaling his single-game career best.

Anderson Hernandez and Daniel Murphy also had two hits and one RBI apiece. Two runs scored on an error, and Luis Castillo added two hits for the Mets, who had lost six of seven.

San Diego's run scored on Chase Headley's sixth-inning single. Kyle Blanks had two of the six hits for the Padres, who won the first three contests in the four-game series.

Losing pitcher Tim Stauffer (1-4) gave up a run and five hits in five innings with two walks and six strikeouts.
