Safina headlines first-round winners

PORTOROZ, Slovenia, July 20 (UPI) -- Dinara Safina, playing for the first time since Wimbledon, was a 6-0, 6-4 winner Monday over Slovenian Tadeja Majeric in the Slovenia Open.

The Russian star is still the top-ranked player in women's tennis. Safina was a 6-1, 6-0 loser to Venus Williams at Wimbledon after losing in the finals of the first two Grand Slam events this year.

Third-seeded Kaia Kanepi of Estonia lost 6-1, 6-2 to Olga Govortsova of Belarus and sixth-seeded Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic won 6-4, 6-4 over Britain's Katie O'Brien.
