Ryan Leaf arrested by federal agents

BELLINGHAM, Wash., June 18 (UPI) -- Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf, wanted in Texas on burglary and drug charges, was arrested Wednesday as he entered the country from Vancouver, Canada.

Lear, 33, was indicted in May on nine felony charges related to a burglary last October at the apartment of an injured player on the West Texas A&M football team, where Leaf was the quarterbacks coach.

Authorities accused him of trying to obtain painkillers from the player.

Earlier this week, the Amarillo Globe News reported that Randall County District Attorney James Farren had threatened to have sheriff's deputies travel to Canada to retrieve Leaf if he did not surrender by Thursday.

"We're working through the bonding process, returning to Texas to resolve these charges against him," Leaf's attorney, Bill Kelly, told the newspaper late Wednesday after his client was arrested in Bellingham, Wash., by U.S. Customs agents.

Kelly said Leaf was working at a fishing lodge in Vancouver after finishing a drug-rehabilitation program.
