Mark Martin wins Michigan Sprint Cup race

BROOKLYN, Mich., June 14 (UPI) -- Mark Martin won Sunday's Sprint Cup LifeLock 400 auto race at Brooklyn, Mich., with his car running on fumes.

The 50-year-old Martin led only on the last lap but claimed his third victory this season.

Like both Jimmie Johnson and Greg Biffle, Martin ran out of fuel late in the race, but was able to capture his fifth career win at the two-mile Michigan International Speedway.

"I went for the points," he said after his victory. "I thought those guys were running too hard for us to save gas."

Martin won for the 38th time in his Sprint Cup career.

Jeff Gordon finished second, Denny Hamlin third, Carl Edwards fourth and Biffle coasted home to fifth place.

Martin moved up from 13th to eighth in the Sprint Cup point standings with 11 races remaining before the "Chase for the Cup" championship begins in September.

"This team deserves to be in the Chase with all the troubles we've had," Martin added.
