Report: Stars fire Coach Dave Tippett

DALLAS, June 10 (UPI) -- The NHL's Dallas Stars fired Coach Dave Tippett Wednesday after failing to make the post-season for the first time since 2002, ESPN reported.

The move follows the May 31 hiring of Joe Nieuwendyk to become general manager, replacing the two-man GM tandem of Brett Hull and Les Jackson.

Tippett spent six years behind the Stars bench after being hired in May 2002. He led the club to two Pacific Division titles (2002-03 and 2005-06) and five straight playoff appearances, including a trip to the Western Conference Finals last season before losing to eventual Stanley Cup champion Detroit in six games.

Tippett, 47, compiled a 271-162-59 record with the Stars, his first NHL head coaching assignment.

He was an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Kings before he was hired in Dallas.

In an 11-year NHL playing career with Hartford, Washington, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, he scored 262 points (93 goals, 169 assists) in 721 games.
