MLB: Kansas City 9, Cleveland 0

CLEVELAND, June 10 (UPI) -- Alberto Callaspo hit a grand slam Wednesday and Gil Meche teamed with two relievers on a four-hitter, carrying Kansas City to a 9-0 drubbing of Cleveland.

Callaspo's home run finished off a power assault that helped the Royals snap a two-game skid. All of the runs came against Carl Pavano (6-5), who was unable to successfully follow what was his first shutout in four seasons.

Both Jose Guillen and Miguel Olivo hit two-run homers in the fourth inning, giving the Royals a 5-1 lead, and they broke the game open one inning later.

Willie Bloomquist, Guillen and Mark Teahen all singled before Callaspo hit a 3-1 pitch over the wall in right. That blast drove Pavano from the game, having given up 11 of Kansas City's eventual 13 hits.

Meche (3-5) allowed all four Cleveland hits and struck out 11 over seven innings. Ron Mahay and Kyle Farnsworth both worked a perfect inning of relief to finish off the shutout.
