MLS: D.C. United 2, New York 0

WASHINGTON, June 4 (UPI) -- Santino Quaranta scored in the first half and Jamie Moreno in the second Thursday, lifting D.C. United to a 2-0 victory over New York.

United (4-2-7) moved into second place in the Eastern Conference.

Quaranta produced his goal in the 36th minute, driving home a shot from inside the penalty area.

Moreno converted a penalty kick in stoppage time after being the focal point in a controversy between United Coach Tom Soehn and Brazilian forward Emilio.

Soehn sent Moreno into the game to replace Emilio, who took exception and threw water bottles onto the field to show his displeasure.

That action drew a red card from referee Terry Vaughn. United did not have to play a man down because Emilio had already been replaced, but he will miss United's next game against Eastern Conference front-runner Chicago.

New York (2-8-3) has lost three in a row.
