NCAA: Huskies win women's softball title

OKLAHOMA CITY, June 3 (UPI) -- The Washington Huskies won their first NCAA women's softball title Tuesday by beating Florida 3-2 in Oklahoma City.

Danielle Lawrie tied a Pac-10 Conference record with her 42nd victory by limiting the top-ranked Gators (63-5) to two runs -- one earned -- on six hits with eight strikeouts.

Washington (51-12) scored the winning run in the third inning when Morgan Stuart rapped a slow roller toward the pitcher's circle with the bases loaded. Florida pitcher Stacy Nelson charged the dribbler but bobbled the ball as Kimi Pohlman raced home from third.

Pohlman, who had reached base that time on an error, had two hits for Washington, as did Ashley Charters. Both had singles in the bottom of the first inning when Washington put two runs on the board and tied the score.

Florida loaded the bases in the fifth inning but Corrie Brooks struck out looking. Lawrie also struck out the final two batters of the game after the Gators put two runners aboard.

The win gave the Pac-10 22 NCAA softball championships in 28 seasons.
