LAKELAND, Fla., May 28 (UPI) -- A Lakeland, Fla., man claims he sold steroids to members of the Washington Nationals and Washington Capitals, various media reports said.
The reports came from ESPN and The Washington Post, but no athletes' names have been divulged.
Richard Thomas and his wife, Sandra, were arrested on 21 state charges of importing and possessing steroids and other controlled drugs earlier this week after a joint raid by the Polk County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency.
Officials of Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League are aware of the allegations made by Thomas after $200,000 worth of steroids and other drugs were found inside his Lakeland home.
"The Washington Capitals have no knowledge of any aspect of this allegation," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement.
"I don't know anything more about this story than what you have read," Nationals president Stan Kasten said on the team's Web site. "Until I hear something from MLB, I don't have anything to be concerned about."
During an appearance at Polk County (Fa.) Superior Court on Thursday, bail for Richard Thomas rose to $400,000 from $215,000, while bail for Sandra Thomas remained at $215,000.
