Report: Ryan Leaf indicted

CANYON, Texas, May 22 (UPI) -- Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf has been indicted by a Randall County (Texas) grand jury on drug and burglary charges, the district attorney's office said.

Leaf, a 1998 first-round draft pick, had been accused of breaking into a Canyon, Texas, apartment on Oct. 30 and stealing an unknown quantity of the painkiller Hydrocodone.

"There were signs of a forced entry," Canyon police Lt. Dale Davis told the Amarillo Daily News.

The drug was being used by an injured player at West Texas A&M University, where Leaf, 33, was the quarterbacks coach before he resigned.

The newspaper reported the indictment was handed down Wednesday and said Leaf is undergoing drug rehabilitation in British Columbia.

Randall County District Attorney James Farren said efforts were being made to persuade the 1997 Heisman Trophy finalist to return to the United States on his own.

Leaf was a first-round pick by San Diego but was a major disappointment with the Chargers and Dallas Cowboys in four seasons.
