He gave up six hits and struck out three before turning things over to the bull pen. Ryan Perry retired six batters in a row and Joel Zumaya picked up his first save despite a major struggle in the ninth.

Zumaya walked Brad Hawpe to open the inning and then gave up a one-out homer to Seth Smith.

After striking out Chris Iannetta, Zumaya hit Garrett Atkins with a pitch and surrendered a single to pinch-hitter Ian Stewart. With the tying run on third base, Zumaya finally struck out Dexter Fowler to end the game.

The runs off Zumaya were the first he has allowed in six appearances since coming off the disabled list.

Brandon Inge drove in two Detroit runs with a solo homer in the fourth and a fielder's choice ground out in the eighth.
