MINNEAPOLIS, May 14 (UPI) -- Joe Crede hit a grand slam with two out in the 13th inning Wednesday, giving Minnesota a marathon 14-10 victory over Detroit.
The teams combined for 31 hits and six home runs, with Minnesota finally prevailing to move within a game of first place in the American League Central.
Detroit scored four times in the seventh and took a 9-7 lead, three of the runs coming on a home run by Miguel Cabrera. Jason Kubel, however, tied it with a two-run shot in the eighth and the game remained 9-9 until the 13th.
Detroit moved in front in the top half of the inning, when Curtis Granderson tripled with one out and scored on a balk by eventual winning pitcher Jesse Crain (2-1).
Brandon Lyon (1-3), who entered the game in the 11th, stayed on to pitch the 13th and he was unable to close it out.
Jason Kubel opened the bottom of the 13th with a single and Nick Punto came on as a pinch-runner. Denard Span sacrificed Punto to second and Matt Tolbert singled him home to tie the score.
Tolbert moved to second on a ground out by Joe Mauer, after which Justin Morneau was walked intentionally. Michael Kuddyer also drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases, bringing up Crede.
Crede hit a 1-2 pitch out to left for his fifth home run of the season.
