NEW YORK, May 8 (UPI) -- Carlos Delgado delivered a three-run homer during a five-run eighth that broke open a tie game Friday and sent the New York Mets past Pittsburgh 7-3.
New York extended its longest winning streak of the season to five games.
Delgado had five RBI overall in backing up the season debut of Jonathon Niese, who was starting in place of the injured Oliver Perez.
Niese lasted six innings while giving up two runs, but the win went to Bobby Parnell (1-0), who worked the eighth.
Pittsburgh has suffered six straight losses and dropped 10 out of 11.
Tyler Yates (0-2) was on the mound for his second inning of relief in the eighth when Jose Reyes opened the frame with a single. Luis Castillo drew a walk and Carlos Beltran singled in Reyes with the go-ahead run.
Sean Burnett relieved Yates and Delgado greeted him with a homer to right. One out later, Daniel Murphy doubled, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Omir Santos.
