MLB: San Diego 8, Philadelphia 7

PHILADELPHIA, April 17 (UPI) -- Scott Hairston's two-run double finished off a San Diego comeback in the eighth inning Friday, giving the Padres an 8-7 decision over Philadelphia.

Hairston started and finished a rally that brought the Padres back from a 7-1 deficit through four innings.

He hit a two-run homer in the fifth and Nick Hundley added a two-run shot in the sixth to get San Diego within 7-5.

The Padres then produced a three-run eighth and Heath Bell worked a fifth straight scoreless inning for the San Diego relief corps to nail down his sixth save.

With Ryan Madson (1-1) on the mound to start the eighth, Chase Headley opened the inning with a single. Two outs later, Luis Rodriguez drew a walk and pinch-hitter Jody Gerut singled in Headley.

That brought up Hairston, whose double to left put the Padres in front and left him with four RBI for the game.

Cla Meredith (2-0), the fourth of sixth San Diego pitchers, worked out of a jam in his lone inning of work -- the seventh -- to get the win.
