Gilroy wins college hockey's top honor

WASHINGTON, April 10 (UPI) -- Boston University senior defenseman Matt Gilroy was named Friday as the winner of the Hobey Baker Award -- college hockey's most prestigious honor.

The award is named for a Princeton hockey player who died in World War I. Gilroy becomes the 29th winner.

Gilroy scored eight goals and recorded 36 points in 43 games for the Terriers this season. He is the second player from Boston University to win the award, joining current New York Rangers captain Chris Drury.

This year's honoree is the first Hobey Baker winner with a chance to lead his team to a national championship since Minnesota defenseman Jordan Leopold did so seven years ago.

Boston University will meet Miami (Ohio) Saturday for the NCAA title.
