Jordan leads Hall of Fame class of 2009

DETROIT, April 6 (UPI) -- Six-time NBA champion and five-time Most Valuable Player Michael Jordan is among the five-member class of 2009 for the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Jordan, fellow players David Robinson and John Stockton and Coach Jerry Sloan were all selected for enshrinement on their first year of consideration, Hall of Fame officials said Monday. The fifth member to be inducted is Rutgers women's Coach C. Vivian Stringer, who had previously been a finalist.

They will be enshrined Sept. 10-12 into the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

Jordan averaged 30.1 points a game over a 15-year NBA career. He won six NBA titles while with the Chicago Bulls and was the MVP in 1988, 1991, 1992, 1996 and 1998. He was also an NCAA champion while at North Carolina and was on the U.S. Olympic "Dream Team" in 1992.

Robinson played 14 NBA seasons with San Antonio, helping the Spurs to NBA titles in 1999 and 2003. He was the NBA MVP in 1995.

Stockton played 19 seasons with the Utah Jazz and finished his career as the all-time leader in assists (15,806) and steals (3,265).

Sloan is the only NBA coach with more than 1,000 wins with a single team (Utah) and, with 1,851 wins is fourth on the all-time coaching victories list.

Stringer has more than 800 wins as a college coach. She is also in the Hall of Fame as a player.
