Chipper Jones extends contract with Braves

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., March 31 (UPI) -- Third baseman Chipper Jones, who has been with the Atlanta Braves for 15 seasons, has agreed to a three-year contract extension with the National League team.

The agreement runs through the 2012 season with an option for 2013, the Braves said in a release on their Web site. The deal is believed to be worth $40 million.

"This contract ensures that Chipper will play his whole career as a Brave, which was a key factor for us, our fans and for Chipper," Atlanta General Manager Frank Wren said. "Chipper has been an outstanding performer with our club for a long time and he is still a key part of our team."

Jones, who turns 37 on April 24, broke in with the Braves in 1993 and has appeared in 2,023 games. He is a career .310 hitter after hitting .364 with 22 home runs and 75 runs batted in in 128 games last season.

He was voted the National League most valuable player in 1999 when he batted .319 with 45 home runs. Jones is a six-time All-Star and has 408 home runs and 1,374 RBI in his career. He has another 13 home runs in 92 postseason games.
