MIAMI, March 15 (UPI) -- Jake Peavy was torched for six runs in two innings Saturday night when Puerto Rico trounced the United States 11-1 at the World Baseball Classic in Miami.
The contest was halted in the seventh inning because of the 10-run mercy rule.
The veteran San Diego Padres right-hander gave up singles to the first three batters he faced before things went completely down hill.
Every Puerto Rican batter scored a run, drove in one or both. Seven of the nine had at least one hit, and Puerto Rico compiled 13 hits and four walks despite not completing seven full turns at-bat.
Winning pitcher Javier Vazquez (2-0) surrendered a run and five hits in five innings for the Puerto Rican squad, which found at least two-thirds of the announced crowd of 30,539 fans in their corner.
Carlos Beltran and Felipe Lopez hit homers.
Team USA played without Boston's Dustin Pedroia (abdominal injury). Atlanta's Brian McCann hit a fifth-inning RBI double.
