ARE, Sweden, March 12 (UPI) -- U.S. skier Lindsey Vonn Thursday won her fifth consecutive super-G race and secured the World Cup super-G title in Sweden.
Vonn completed the super-G course at Are, Sweden, in 1 minute, 20.63 seconds, edging Italian Nadia Fanchini by 0.08 seconds. German Maria Riesch finished third, about one-quarter second back of Vonn.
The win paired with her victory Wednesday in the downhill, and last year's downhill first-place finish, gives Vonn three titles. She has also locked up this year's World Cup overall point victory.
It was her 22nd World Cup win overall and ninth of the season, which is a U.S. record.
Vonn turned in the best time at each split Thursday but an error at the bottom of the course cut into her final edge over Fanchini.
"I think I skied the top really well. After I went off the first jump I knew I was going pretty fast because I got really good air," Vonn said. "I fought the whole way. I made a big mistake at the bottom and almost crashed but I kept it together and made it to the finish. It was an incredible feeling to come down and know that I had just won the super-G title."
