Report: No hip surgery for A-Rod

NEW YORK, March 5 (UPI) -- The troublesome right hip of New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez will be handled with a conservative approach, MLB.com reported late Thursday.

The news followed an ESPN Deportes report earlier in the day where A-Rod's brother, Joe, said during a telephone interview that the third baseman had been scheduled for surgery on a cyst on his right hip next Monday in Colorado, and likely would require a 10-week rehabilitation period.

"I think we're collectively trying to figure out what's best to do for everybody involved," general manager Brian Cashman said on the team's Web site. "If surgery is what has to happen, that's what you have to do. If surgery is not something that has to happen at this point in time, then it's something that's manageable. We're all trying to be open-minded."

"Obviously, he is concerned," Rodriguez' agent, Scott Boras, had told ESPN Deportes. "It's been a difficult few days for him."

A-Rod had planned to play for his native Dominican Republic during the World Baseball Classic, starting with Saturday's contest against Netherlands.
