MONTERREY, Mexico, March 4 (UPI) -- Third-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta knocked off American Jilly Craybas 6-1, 6-0 Tuesday in the first round of the first Monterrey Open women's tennis event.
Fifth-seeded Hungarian Agnes Szavay and sixth-seeded Czech Iveta Benesova also made it to the second round. Szavay easily handled Pauline Parmentier of France 6-2, 6-2. Benesova breezed by Israeli Shahar Peer 6-4, 6-2.
Other Tuesday winners on the hard courts at the Sierra Madre Tennis Club included Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, who defeated German Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4); Romanian Edina Gallovits, a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 winner over Slovak Magdalena Rybarikova; Italian Roberta Vinci, who ousted Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
Czech Petra Cetkovska downed Slovak Jarmila Groth 6-3, 6-2, while Hungarian Melinda Czink won a 7-5, 6-1 match over Russian Alla Kudryavtseva. Ukrainian Mariya Koryttseva eliminated Slovak Lenka Wienerova, 6-4, 6-1 and American Vania King beat Czech Klara Zakopalova 6-1, 6-4.
The winner of the $220,000 event gets paid $37,000.
