PITTSBURGH, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes was arraigned on a marijuana possession charge Thursday, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.
During an appearance in a Pittsburgh Municipal Court, the Super Bowl XLIII MVP was released on his own recognizance.
He had waived his right to a preliminary hearing.
The waiver means he must stand trial on the charge, or work out a plea agreement with Allegheny County prosecutors.
Three marijuana-filled cigars were found inside his vehicle by Pittsburgh police during a traffic stop in October 2008.
The newspaper reported that is vehicle was searched after police smelled an odor of burning marijuana.
The charge against the 24-year-old former Ohio State star carries up to a year in jail but probation or a fine are common in most cases.
Holmes was MVP of the Steelers' 27-23 win over the Arizona Cardinals after a game-winning touchdown reception with 35 seconds remaining.
