Report: NHL's Forsberg out this season

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Injury-plagued forward Peter Forsberg has decided against a return to the NHL this season, Sweden's national broadcaster SVT reported Friday.

Forsberg, 35, a two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Colorado Avalanche and the league's 2003 MVP, told SVT that he has returned to the ice in recent weeks to test his ailing right foot without success.

"There won't be any NHL this season, that's totally clear," he said. "If I can play it will be in the (Swedish) Elite Series and Modo. I will be training with Modo during the national team break and hope to make a decision after that. Modo understands that I'm still not sure I can play, but the foot feels better (today) than it did at the start of the week."

Injuries kept him out of half of Colorado's final 18 regular season games last season and three of their four games in the second round of the playoffs.
